>>>>>Challenge#1: Field Researcher 🌏🚩

🌏Be a field researcher for a day 😊

🌏Scientific enquiry or investigation mean how to find out how something works by asking questions about it, and trying to investigate it in a methodical step-by-step process.

🌏There are professional scientists out in the field all the time in various environments such as the dessert, mountains or even down in the Antarctic investigating to find answers to their burning question(s).

There are different types of sources scientists use to help them with their investigations or enquiries such as data, primary sources and secondary sources.

🌏Data: is just another term for information. You collect data when you carry out a scientific enquiry.

🌏Primary sources: is data you have collected yourself by scientific investigations.

🌏Secondary sources: is data collected by other people. Secondary sources could be data in books, websites, journals, etc. These sources can help you to further your investigations on a topic.

Field research and scientific investigations all start with a question. So, our adventure is going to find out…

🌏 β€œIs field research easier with or without using a smartphoneβ€πŸŒ

STEPS

  1. Challenge is to find 3 different plants. This could be the playground, your backyard or the park. Be safe though.

  2. Firstly, do these tasks without your phone. List up the plants and try to identify them. Time how long it takes you to identify the plants.

  3. Next, do the same task with a smartphone using this app:
A Community for Naturalists Β· iNaturalist Australia (ala.org.au)

If you don’t have a phone, kindly ask permission to use your parent’s/guardian’s or teacher’s phone.

  4. Note your observations on how long it took you to identify the plants, first without a phone and then with the use of a smartphone. We have provided a simple field research chart example below to help you get started with your field research:

5. Now with the blank template table provided below fill out your own scientific investigation and share it with us your observations and findings with us:
