What is the Flex-a-thon?

The Flex-a-thon is an exciting online STEM experience designed for girls aged 10–14 and anyone who supports them!

It’s a hackathon-style event where girls flex their creativity, critical thinking and tech skills inside an immersive interactive metaverse platform.

Who can join: Designed for girls aged 10-14.

Is this a safe online event: Yes. We have designed our Flex-a-thon metaverse experience to be a safe, respectful and age-appropriate space for girls aged 10-14. We use a secured access link, along with strict behaviour expectations and community rules that promote kindness, respect and positive participation. We also follow strong privacy and safety practices that align with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

Where is the Flex-a-thon held: It is held on the Girls Day Out in STEM [GDOS] website metaverse.

What do I need: Your paid entry ticket with your password and link, a stable internet connection and a device that can connect to the internet.

How much is the entrance fee: $20 per participant.

Where can I register: To register go to the Girls Day Out in STEM Eventbrite page. You can also register through our Girls Day Out in STEM website that will link you to our Eventbrite page.

Can I join with friends, family, teammates or buddies: Yes, you can. However each participant needs to pay for their own individual $20 ticket.

Do I need any prior knowledge: No prior tech skill knowledge is necessary but can be an advantage.

How long do I have to complete the Flex challenges: From 9am Thursday, April 23 to 5pm Sunday, April 26, 2026, AEST.

Why is this important: Recent jobs rates technology skills as the fastest growing job employment and higher paying. There are less girls interested in these professions yet a diverse workforce is important and needed.

What are the tech skills I will use in the Flex-a-thon: Artificial Intelligence [AI] prompts; chatbots and cybersecurity; agents; Model Context Protocol [MCP]; pitch skills using tech.

What are other skills I will use in the Flex-a-thon: Soft skills such as time management, problem solving, critical thinking, workflow planning.

How many Flex challenges are there: There are 5 Flex challenges which start from basic level 1 through to more challenging level 5. The 5 Flex Challenges are: Prompt Power; Chatbot Champions; Homework Hero; MCP squad and Pitch Perfect.

How many prize draws are there: There are individual draw prizes for each of the 5 Flex challenges, a special state prize and a grand prize. To be eligible for the chance to be in the prize draws you must submit your completed Flex challenges before 5pm Sunday, April 26, 2026, AEST.

What is the Grand Prize: a brand new pink Apple iPad! To be eligible to be in the grand prize draw, all 5 Flex challenges must be submitted before 5pm Sunday, April 26, 2026, AEST.

How will prize winners be notified: Team GDOS will notify winners directly via the email address that was provided when you paid to register. We will also make announcement on our social media channels.

Who are Team GDOS: Since 2017 our female team of teachers, tech experts and STEM advisors and advocates have been providing safe, inclusive and educator-backed programs trusted by schools, teachers and parents.

Is my privacy protected: Your privacy is very important to us. Everything is optional. We only collect the minimum information needed for participation. We never share your personal details, photos or any identifying information with third parties unless required by law.

Why April: the GDOS Flex-a-thon is celebrating the International Girls in ICT Day, April 23, 2026.

Is this a school event: ANY girl 10-14 years old can participate with an individual paid entry fee of $20 and we welcome group bookings from any school, home school, STEM club or team. The Flex-a-thon is also supported by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) Qld as part of their advocacy to support and encourage more girls into tech.
