Be Your Own Data Science Coach!

Polling

🎉 Hey future data scientists and fitness legends! 🎉

Before we dive into this challenge, let’s kick things off with TWO quick polls…

Hold the bus…

Actually, what is a coach?

So… What is data science?

Think of data science as detective work with numbers. It’s all about collecting information, analysing it, and using it to make smart decisions. It’s how Netflix knows what show you’ll binge next, how weather apps predict rain, and how athletes improve their game!

👩‍🔬 Fun fact: Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is leading the way in combining data + sports + tech with projects like AusiSTAR—helping Aussie athletes train for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics! 🏆

So, are you ready to become your own data science coach? Let’s do this! 🚀

A coach is someone who helps you get better at something—whether it’s running faster, solving tricky math problems, or perfecting your TikTok dance routine. Coaches give advice, motivation, and sometimes even tough love (yes, they will make you do those extra squats).

But what if… your coach wasn’t a person at all?

What if your data was your coach? That’s where data science comes in!

Now here is the challenge…

Be Your Own Data Science Coach!

🎯 Mission: Track your fitness progress using data science and see how you improve over time!

Step 1: Set Your Goal 🎯

Before you start, pick a simple fitness goal! Here are some fun ideas:

✅ Walk for 10 minutes nonstop
✅ Do 5 push-ups every day
✅ Hold a plank for 30 seconds
✅ Dance to your favourite song every morning

Your goal should answer one big question: “Am I there yet?”

Step 2: Data Collection 📊

Every day, write down what you did. This is called collecting data. You can:

📅 Use a notebook to track your progress
📈 Draw a graph to see your improvement
📲 Use an app (or even just the Notes app on your phone)

The more you track, the more you’ll see how awesome you’re becoming!

Step 3: Data Analysis 🔍

Time to be a data detective! Look at your progress and ask yourself:

💡 Am I getting better?
💡 Do I want to push myself more?
💡 Is my fitness goal too easy (or too hard)?

Maybe you double your steps by the end of the week! Or maybe you realise you prefer dancing over planking (fair enough!).

Step 4: Observations & Decisions 🤔

Now that you have all this data, what’s next?

🚀 Level up! Make your goal harder if you’re smashing it!
🛑 Adjust! If something’s too tough, tweak it so it’s more fun!
💡 Invite friends! Science says we do better when we have support!

Coach Takeaways!🏆

Did you know you’ve been doing maths and science this whole time?! 🤯

✅ You collected data like a scientist
✅ You tracked progress using graphs
✅ You analysed data to make decisions
✅ You reported findings (just like in real science!)

Congrats, you’ve just used data science to improve your fitness   🎉
