In this adventure, we’ll be exploring XR technology & biomimicry by designing a 3D building or structure inspired by nature. 🌱💚🌏

🌏What is XR?

XR is short for extended reality - it’s the collective term for immersive technologies that merge the real world with the virtual. These technologies provide unique immersive experiences, transforming the way we interact with the digital world. There are three main categories of XR:

● Virtual Reality (VR)

● Augmented Reality (AR)

● Mixed Reality (MR)

At the QLD XR Hub, we support innovative tech companies to supercharge their work with XR - and show organisations how they can use these innovations in their industry.

🌏What is biomimicry?

Biomimicry.org describes it as “a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges - and find hope.”

The science of biomimicry involves 3 essential elements:

1. Emulate: The scientific, research-based practice of learning from and then replicating nature’s forms, processes, and ecosystems to create more regenerative designs.

2. Ethos: The philosophy of understanding how life works and creating designs that continuously support and create conditions conducive to life.

3. (Re)Connect: The concept that we are nature and find value in connecting to our place on Earth as part of life’s interconnected systems. (Re)Connect as a practice encourages us to observe and spend time in nature to understand how life works so that we may have a better ethos to emulate biological strategies in our designs.

🌏Why learn from nature? 🌱🕸️

We have the innate potential to create a world that is harmonious, regenerative, and supports the well-being of all Life. As a young species, we are fortunate enough to have guidance to help us rise to this challenge.💚

Our planet-mates, the fantastic meshwork of plants, animals, and microbes, have done billions of years of research and development. By infusing biological strategies in design, we can transform sustainable innovation. 🐝

🌳 Choose your natural inspiration

🌳 Choose your natural inspiration.

Choose an element or structure from nature that inspires you, like a honeycomb, a tree, or the build and movements of your favourite animal.

🕵️‍♀️Study its design.

Look closely at your chosen natural element to understand its design principles - what makes it special? What shapes and structures does it use, and how are they helpful?

🧠 Plan your biomimicry design.

Use the design principles of your chosen element as inspiration to design a 3D building or structure. It could be a new, unique structure or a reimagining of something that already exists. Think about how these natural design principles are making your structure better or more beautiful.

🎨 Create a 3D model of your design.

Using Tinkercad, a free 3D modelling software, bring your design to life. You can use basic shapes, colours and textures to build and style it however you like - you may even want to style it in a way that reflects the original natural element.

🤩 Show off your imaginative 3D design in the XR Hub World!

It’s time to add your finished design to the XR Hub metaverse, where it can be enjoyed in all its immersive glory!

💬 Tell us about your 3D design.

We’d love to know what inspired your design and how you came up with it. When submitting the challenge, share a short explanation of:

● the natural element that inspired you

● a walkthrough of your design process and 3D modelling experience.

🌏Tinkercad - Tinkering Tutorial🌏

To create your 3D design, we’ll be using Tinkercad - a free, easy-to-use app for 3D design that you can use in your web browser.

Let’s go through some quick step-by-step instructions to show you how to get set up and start tinkering!

If you prefer video instructions, check out this YouTube tutorial by Skills Factory: https://vimeo.com/993840903/af8661215e?share=copy

GETTING STARTED

● Go to Tinkercad 3D Design in your web browser: https://www.tinkercad.com/3d-design

● Click ‘Start Tinkering’.

To start tinkering, you’ll need to create an account. Click ‘Create a personal account’ and enter Australia and your date of birth as prompted.

●      You will now be in the Tinkercad Dashboard: https://www.tinkercad.com/dashboard

●      To get started, click either ‘Create your first 3D design’ or the ‘+ Create’ menu.

HOW TO USE TINKERCAD

Your new blank design will look like this:

These are the basic features you’ll be using to create your design:

● The blue Workplane acts as the reference point for your 3D shapes - everything in your design will be anchored to this.

-        If you need more space, you can change the size of your Workplane at any point by adjusting the measurements in the bottom right corner of your screen.

 ● In the top left corner, you’ll find the 3D ViewCube - click + drag on this to change the perspective of your Workplane.

● On the right side of the screen are the shapes that you can add to your design.

-        Select the drop-down menu to choose different categories of shapes.

-        The Basic Shapes will likely make up the core of your design - but look around, explore and get as creative as you like!

● Your project will be saved automatically as you go - so you can create carefree!

CREATING YOUR 3D DESIGN

● To add shapes, click on a shape from the menu and then click on your Workplane.

To move shapes, click + drag them around your Workplane.

●      To edit the size & colour of your shape, click on it and use the shape menu that appears in the top right corner.

●      You can also edit your shape by clicking + dragging the dots (called nodes) and arrows around the shape.

The white nodes resize the shape freely in any direction. Hold down the shift key if you want to resize the shape whilst keeping the original proportions.

The black nodes resize in a single direction (e.g. to lengthen the shape).

The black cone on top of the shape will lift the shape off the Workplane and let you adjust the shape’s height in relation to the Workplane.

-  The arrows will rotate the shape.

●      To lock shapes, click the padlock icon in the shape menu. Click this again to unlock.

●      To hide shapes, click the lightbulb icon in the shape menu. Click this again to show the shape. If you’ve hidden multiple shapes, you can click the light bulb in the top main menu to show all hidden shapes again.

●      To select multiple shapes, click + drag across the Workplane to select them.

- Selecting multiple shapes will let you move & edit them in the same way.

- Click the Group button in the top main menu to turn your selected shapes into a single new shape. Click this again to ungroup your shapes.

Exporting your 3D Design

When you’re all done with your biomimicry design, you’re ready to export and submit it!

●      Click ‘Export’ in the top right of the menu bar.

●      Export the model to one of the following file formats:

o   .OBJ

o   .GLTF

Congratulations!🎉

You’ve created a 3D design using the principles of biomimicry. You can create as many designs as you like - maybe you think you could make an even better structure now that you’ve got the hang of it, maybe you’re just having heaps of fun!
